Position: Court Bailiff

  Salary: $ 43,000

 

Department: Superior Court - Felony Division Location: County City Building

Description:

 This position is full-time, non-exempt, and is covered under the Saint Joseph County Employee Policy Manual. 

Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Shift Times: Monday through Friday

 

Essential Functions:

 

(May perform any or all of the below-listed duties. These should be interpreted as examples of the work and are not necessarily all-inclusive. Functions may be changed at any time depending upon operational requirements of the department and within the parameters of the post held by the employee.)

  • Prepare and maintain electronic and/or paper files of the Court and provide the Judge with necessary files and docket sheets. Update and file dockets at the end of each day.
  •  Research cases and prepare summaries, as requested.
  •  Maintain the Court’s hearing and trial calendars and maintain the flow of cases.
  •  Prepare the courtroom for the daily court activities; secure the courtroom between hearings and at the end of the work day.
  •  Review proposed minute entries and proposed orders submitted to the Court.
  • Serve as liaison to the Clerk’s Office, providing information and assistance as requested.
  •  Oversee bench trials and jury trials, enforce Superior Court rules and monitor Court proceedings, including passing exhibits, monitor jury and audience, and ensure the presence of proper Court security.
  •  Receive and review jury lists for completeness and eligibility, and prepare jury lists for attorneys, the Judge, and the Court Reporter. Call jurors, respond to questions, and receive and review excuses from jury duty with the Judge and attorneys.
  • Ensure the integrity of jury deliberations, issue instructions, and safeguard juror welfare and compliance with proper Court procedures.
  • Calculate jury fees and forward to the Court Administrator as appropriate.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Report directly to the Judge for daily operational assignments and to the Court Administrator for payroll and personnel issues. 

  Qualifications:

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED. A college degree is preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and ability to research.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with co-workers, other County departments, the Clerk’s Office, attorneys, jurors, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, disabilities, as well as to gender, ethnic, racial, and cultural diversities.
  • Understand the standard practices and procedures of the Court and have the ability to oversee Court proceedings, monitor juries and deliberations, and ensure proper scheduling of Court hearings.
  • Knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and organized files and prepare correspondence and documents as required.
  • Know an extent of legal terminology, standard legal documents, and petitions, and have the ability to maintain and update Court files and dockets accordingly.
  • Proficient in operating standard office equipment, including, but not limited to, a computer, printer, scanner, copy machine, telephone, and fax machine.
  • Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of information and records according to state requirements.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Capable of serving the public competently and with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.
  • Understands verbal and written instructions and can memorize, retain, and carry out such instructions.
  • Competent to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
  • Proficient in working under time pressure and balancing several tasks at the same time.
  • Ability to occasionally work extended, evening, and/or weekend hours, if directed by the Judge.
